Window Replacement in Michigan

Two separate things decide a window job in Michigan: who is licensed to do the work, which the state decides, and what the window has to do, which the climate decides.

Licensed Michigan installers. No obligation for the call.

The license is the checkable half. Michigan issues it, and a trading name is often not the licensed entity. One sentence on the phone settles it: under which name is it held.

The federal tax credit for windows ended on 31 December 2025. Work installed in 2025 is still claimable on that year’s return, but there is no federal credit for 2026 installations. What is left is state and utility programmes, which vary.

What the window itself has to do depends on where in the state you are: the ENERGY STAR criteria differ by climate zone, and several states contain more than one.

The day itself

One opening takes a couple of hours. A house takes days rather than weeks, and the order rarely changes.

  1. A work van with wrapped window units being unloaded 01Units arrive built to your measurements.
  2. Two installers carrying a window unit upright across a lawn 02Carried in, one opening at a time.
  3. An old wooden sash being lifted out of an opening 03The old sash comes out. Dust sheets first.
  4. Hands setting a shim under a new window and checking it with a level 04Shimmed and levelled — a house settles, openings do not stay square.
  5. An installer pressing a new window unit into an opening and fastening it 05Set, fastened, sealed against the weather.
  6. An installer fitting new interior trim around a finished window 06Trim back on, and the room is a room again.

Describing the job costs nothing

Nothing is measured or ordered until you say so. Useful on a first call: how many windows, what type they are, and what is wrong with them.

License
Held by the contractor and issued in Michigan. Ask which name it is held under — a trading name and the licensed entity are often not the same.
Lead certification
Required by federal rule for paid work on any home built before 1978. It has a number, and the firm should give it without hesitating.
The call
Describing the job commits you to nothing. Nothing is measured or ordered until you say so.
