Every town page is built from public data rather than written from imagination, and four sources decide what one says.

The ENERGY STAR criteria for residential windows, version 7.0, in force since 23 October 2023. They divide the country into four climate zones and set a U-factor and a solar heat gain figure for each. The second of those reverses between the north and the south, which is why the same window is right in one place and wrong in another.

The American Community Survey from the U.S. Census Bureau, which gives the age of the housing — and with it a reasonable guess at what is in the wall now, and whether the federal lead rule is likely to apply.

The EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule, which requires a certified firm for paid work on any home built before 1978. That is a requirement rather than a suggestion, and it is checkable by asking for a number.

Distance to the ocean, measured from the coastline, for the places where coastal codes come into it. Whether a particular address falls inside a wind-borne debris region is a determination the building department makes, and this site does not guess at it.
